In the heart of Lutende, a small village in Zambia, a young man named Kwalombota Mulawa has an extraordinary dream, despite facing immense challenges. Just 15 years ago Hands of Hope, a nonprofit based in Barrington Illinois helped build the community’s first well, and in 2011, built the first school. Before these milestones, children and mothers spent hours walking to collect water daily, and there were no educational opportunities. Though Lutende still grapples with challenges related to water, food, and healthcare, Kwalombota remains steadfast in his aspiration to become a doctor.
Family of Four
Kwalombota’s life is intricately woven with his family. He currently lives with his mother and three siblings, growing up without a father. Their mother works tirelessly to provide for her children, serving as Kwalumbota’s greatest inspiration. She instilled in him the belief that education is a gateway to opportunity. “Education is an equalizer,” he explains. “When I complete my tertiary education, I’ll be working to uplift my family and community.” At 7 years old, Kwalombota began his education at Lutende Primary School, and later graduated top of his class from Lutende Secondary School. Since Hands of Hope established the schools in the village in 2011, parents and children alike are filled with hope that they too can have the same opportunities as those in the city.

A Passion for Math
Among the various subjects he studied, Kwalombota developed a love for mathematics. His math teacher has been instrumental in his academic growth: “Math taught me to think critically, and my teacher encouraged me to work hard not just in math, but in all my subjects.” Through this guidance, Kwalombota has not only honed his math skills but also learned invaluable lessons about diligence and perseverance.
A Dream of Becoming a Doctor
Kwalumbota’s ambition to become a doctor is driven by a deep desire to make a difference in his community. He has witnessed the heartbreaking struggles of families in Lutende, especially in times of medical need. The recent tragedy of a pregnant woman who died while walking several miles to the nearest healthcare facility weighs heavily on Lutende. Since this tragic event, Hands of Hope is working to build a medical clinic in the village so that no one will have to walk miles to receive medical care. “After my tertiary education, I want to return to my community to empower and heal them,” Kwalombota says. “I want to be a testament to what is possible, inspiring children to dream of a better future.”
Support from the Community
While the village of Lutende is proud of and supports Kwalombota, the financial means to send students to college are lacking. Youth in villages such as Lutende need sponsorships to turn their aspirations for higher education into a reality. Fortunately, after hearing his story, a generous donor from Hands of Hope has agreed to sponsor Kwalombota. His journey is a powerful reminder of the impact that education can have on individuals and communities alike. With his new educational opportunities, he hopes to pave the way for a new generation in Lutende.
