Transforming Lives in Litawa: A Borehole Brings Hope in Western Zambia

In the western region of Zambia, access to clean water in rural areas remains a significant challenge, leaving millions struggling to meet one of humanity’s most basic needs. The village of Litwawa, located in the floodplains of Western Zambia, faced this harsh reality until a new chapter began, thanks to Hands of Hope. Recognizing the urgent need for clean water, they initiated a vital project to drill a borehole well in the village, leading to transformative changes for the community.

In an interview conducted in October 2024, Brown Mubiana Mebo, the chief of Litawa, shared the profound impact the borehole has had on his community. Previously, residents relied on water from the floodplains, a risky source contaminated by animal activity. The recent drought caused by El Niño during the 2023-2024 season has only worsened these water-related issues, making the scarcity of clean water a pressing health concern that negatively affects daily life.

When asked about the time it took to fetch water before the well was installed, the chief recounted: “It took a very long time such that you would even forget that someone had gone out to draw water. It was very far and time-consuming.” The quality of the water was equally alarming. “We used to share water with animals and would even find rats and snakes in the water source we were using. The quality was very poor.” Waterborne illnesses were common, leading to stomach diseases and diarrhea that often required visits to the clinic for treatment.

With the installation of the new borehole, the time spent fetching water has drastically reduced. Villagers can now access fresh, clean water in a fraction of the time, freeing up hours in their day. “The people in the village draw water from here and now no longer walk long distances to fetch water.” This newfound efficiency has revitalized the community, allowing families to focus on other essential tasks and significantly improving their quality of life. Women and children, who previously spent hours collecting water for cooking and hygiene, now enjoy more time for education and personal care, which is particularly important for menstruating women.

Before the borehole, children often arrived late to school, lacking the time to wash themselves, which would lead to punishment. Now, with a central water supply, they have clean water to bathe and groom themselves before classes. This simple yet significant change has fostered a sense of dignity and pride, enhancing their self-esteem and readiness for learning.

Water is also a catalyst for economic growth. As the chief explained, “Water helps in a lot of things here. Those who do business especially used to pay people to fetch clean water from distant places, but now they can draw nearby for their business. Others can water their small gardens.”

The gratitude expressed by the villagers is profound. So much so, that the chief celebrated with a song of thanks:

“The things of God bring peace and happiness
Come let us dance
The putting of the borehole shows that there are people who have love for us.
Now let us together pump this water. Let us pump with peace and gladness
There are people who love us and have helped us
We no longer have to go long distances to draw water for drinking
We are happy. Thank you so much.”

The borehole not only provides a critical resource but also symbolizes hope and resilience for Litwawa. With the support of Hands of Hope, this village is not just surviving; they are making significant strides in improving their quality of life and fostering confidence for future generations. When asked if he had any final words for the sponsors of the borehole, the chief concluded, “My last words are just thank you to the sponsors for giving us this borehole. We are truly grateful for your support and may you be moved to do more good work. God bless you.”
